Shaffer tops Chargers in kills, digs in loss to No. 12 Skyhawks
GALESBURG — Abigail Shaffer led the Sandburg volleyball team in kills and digs, but the Chargers were swept 25-12, 25-18, 26-24 in an Arrowhead Conference match Wednesday night at home against Sauk Valley.
Shaffer totaled nine kills for Sandburg and picked up 13 digs in the match, but the hosts couldn't keep pace with the visiting Skyhawks, who came in ranked 12th in NJCAA Division II.
With the Chargers trailing 6-4 in the opening set, Sauk Valley won 10 of the next 11 points to run away for an early lead. A Shaffer kill got Sandburg within 17-13 in the second, but the Skyhawks went on a 7-1 spurt to open up a two-set lead.
A 6-0 run in the third put the Chargers up 15-14, and Sandburg held set point at 24-22 after back-to-back kills from Madalynn Knapp and Harlee Hainds. But Sauk Valley answered by winning the next four points to close out a sweep.
Three other Chargers joined Shaffer with double-digit digs on the night. Addison Gillen, Jalie Eller and Macy Nolan each had 10.
Setter Quinn Rexroat had 21 assists and served both Sandburg aces.
