Shaffer’s 13 kills, 28 digs lead Chargers in Sophomore Night win over Black Hawk
GALESBURG — Playing her final home match, Abigail Shaffer led the Sandburg volleyball team in kills and just missed tying her career high in digs in the Chargers' 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 26-24 Sophomore Night win over Black Hawk on Wednesday night.
Shaffer, who was honored along with fellow sophomore Emma Schweigert prior to the contest, totaled 13 kills and 28 digs in the victory. She set a season high for digs and was one away from matching her career best of 29 against Walters State in last year's opening round of the national tournament.
Shaffer was one of three Chargers (15-22 overall, 7-3 Arrowhead Conference) to reach double figures in kills on the evening. Harlee Hainds had 11 to go along with three blocks. Jalie Eller added 10 kills in the win to close the regular season.
Sandburg opened the match with a 5-0 run, including back-to-back aces from Taliya Galloway. Galloway finished the night with seven kills, a team-best four aces and a block.
The Chargers held set point at 24-20 in the second, but the Braves rattled off four in a row to tie it. Knotted at 25, consecutive kills from Hainds and Eller gave Sandburg a two-set lead.
The Chargers looked poised to sweep the match after taking a 23-21 lead in the third and holding match point at 25-24, but the Braves won the next three to stay alive.
The match seemed destined to go to a fifth set as Black Hawk led 24-19 in the fourth, but Sandburg stormed back to win the final seven points of the contest. Eller started the run with a kill, and Shaffer followed with back-to-back kills to turn the momentum back in the Chargers' favor.
Setter Quinn Rexroat had 38 assists in the victory, tied for her third most this season. Libero Addison Gillen's 30 digs were a season high, eclipsing her mark of 27 on Sept. 20 against Olive-Harvey. Freshman Macy Nolan added 10 digs for the Chargers.
