No. 25 Chargers sweep away Kishwaukee in home opener

GALESBURG — The 25th-ranked Sandburg volleyball team had little issue in sweeping Kishwaukee 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 on Wednesday in the Chargers' home and Arrowhead Conference opener.

Sophomore Abigail Shaffer had a team-leading 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage while adding 13 digs and a pair of blocks in the win for the Chargers (3-4 overall, 1-0 Arrowhead).

Up 19-14 in the first set, back-to-back kills from Shaffer set off a 6-0 Sandburg run to take the opening frame.

The Chargers jumped to a 9-1 lead to begin the second and used a 10-0 run later on to force set point at 24-8.

Sandburg held a 12-10 lead in the third before four straight points helped them put away the Kougars for good. During the run, Quinn Rexroat set up Harlee Hainds for a kill, and Hainds came back two points later for one of her three blocks on the night.

In addition to Shaffer's 11 kills, Sandburg got nine from Jalie Eller and eight each from Hainds and Madalynn Knapp. Rexroat had 34 assists from the setter position.

Libero Addison Gillen led four Chargers with double-digit digs, totaling 14. Shaffer and Eller each had 13 digs, and sophomore Emma Schweigert picked up 10. Schweigert also had two of Sandburg's five aces on the evening.

Hainds and Taliya Galloway tied for the team lead with three blocks.
