Chargers Blow by Black Hawk for 17th Consecutive Home Win
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team raced to an early lead and went on to cruise to a 25-6, 25-9, 25-16 Arrowhead Conference sweep of Black Hawk on Wednesday night at John Lewis Gym.
The victory was the 17th in a row at home for the Chargers (22-10 overall, 7-1 Arrowhead Conference), who remain tied with Sauk Valley atop the conference standings with two matches to play.
Sandburg won the first six points of the match, with four of them coming on aces from freshman libero Madeline Mooney. The Chargers opened up leads of 17-2 in the first set, 16-5 in the second and 11-2 in the third. Their only deficits in the match came on the opening points of the second and third sets.
Sandburg hit a whopping .612 for the match, putting down 32 kills and making just two errors on 49 total attacks. The Chargers hit .611 in the second set and .867 in an errorless third set.
Natalie Burden finished with a team-high 10 kills in the sweep. Ayla Cannon added seven and had a team-best five blocks (four solo). Grace Vyhnanek had 27 assists in the victory.
Mooney picked up 15 digs in addition to serving four of the Chargers' seven aces. Addison DeSpain had two aces, and AJ Rask finished with three blocks for Sandburg.
