Sammons Swats Slam in Sandburg Sweep at Sauk Valley

DIXON — Abbie Sammons hit a grand slam in Game 2 on Friday against Sauk Valley for her first RBIs as a Charger, highlighting an Arrowhead Conference sweep for the Carl Sandburg College softball team. Sandburg followed by dropping a pair of contests Saturday at South Suburban.

KEY MOMENT
Up 2-1 in the second, the Chargers extended their lead to 8-1 behind seven hits and a walk in the inning. Riley Creasey singled in a run to make it 3-1. Emma Wolfe double in a pair of runs, and then Maleaha Nagel, Brooklyn Walker and Kayla Wolf strung together three straight RBI base hits.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Wolfe fell a triple away from hitting for the cycle, going 3 for 4 with three runs and four drive in. She hit a two-run homer in the first to open the scoring, had an RBI double in the second and singled in the third.

Abbi Sammons popped a grand slam to right field in the second inning, capping an eight-run frame that put the Chargers ahead 11-1.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Punctuated by her grand slam, Sammons collected three hits in four at-bats, scored three times and drove in four. The effort marked her first multi-hit game first RBIs as a Charger.

KEY MOMENTS
• Tied at 8 in the sixth, the Chargers went ahead with a pair of two-out RBI singles. Chelsey Catton singled to center to drive in Wolf, and Carley Hacke followed with a base hit to right to bring home Creasey for a 10-8 lead.
• The Bulldogs opened the bottom of the sixth with an inside-the-park home run and then put together four straight hits as part of a two-out rally to take the lead. Three straight singles tied the game at 10, and then a two-run triple to right by Trina Pappas made it 12-10.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Creasey finished 3 for 4 with a double, scored three times and drove in a run to lead a 15-hit effort by the Chargers lineup.

Walker was the only Charger to collect multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff spot.
