Chargers bounce back with 5-1 win over Kennedy-King

GALESBURG — After being kept off the scoreboard in a road loss Saturday, the Sandburg men's soccer team bounced back with a 5-1 victory Monday afternoon against Kennedy-King at Kleine Field.

The Chargers dropped a 2-0 decision Saturday at Madison but tallied five second-half goals in their Labor Day victory over the Statesmen.

Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo scored twice Monday for the Chargers (2-1), who have scored five goals after halftime in both of their home contests.

Following a scoreless first half, Fernandez Do Carmo got Sandburg on the board with a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Jaime Martin Caballero was taken down in the box, and Fernandez Do Carmo calmly put away the penalty with a shot toward the center of the net.

Kennedy-King evened the score in the 55th minute with a goal on a direct free kick, but Sandburg responded with four unanswered goals to take the victory.

In the 60th minute, Craig Sewell put away a half-volley in the box off an assist from Ryan Lenihan for the go-ahead goal. The goal came shortly after two Kennedy-King players had been sent off for wearing illegal equipment, forcing the Statesmen to play shorthanded momentarily.

Luis Garcia came in 1-on-1 with the Kennedy-King keeper in the 70th minute and chipped a shot over him for a 3-1 advantage. The Chargers added two late goals for the final score. Fernandez Do Carmo deflected in a corner kick from Iker Garcia in the 84th minute, and Valentin Kretschmer scored off a Leon Woldu assist in the 88th minute.

Linus Richtberg stopped both Statesmen shots he faced in earning a clean sheet in net.
