Jepkirui, Kiprop Race to Wins for Sandburg XC Teams in Opener

DIXON — Barbra Viola Jepkirui and Emmanuel Kiprop came away with victories as the Carl Sandburg College cross country teams turned in dominant efforts as they opened their season at the Sauk Valley Early Season Opener on Saturday.

Jepkirui won the 2-mile women's race in 13 minutes, 23.42 seconds and was one of five Chargers runners among the top nine finishers. Dayanna Ortiz was fifth in 15:26.83, while Faith Kiprop (15:37.45), Mary Njugunga (16:16.22) and Lily Sharum (17:36.74) were seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

The Chargers men's team swept the top five spots in the 3-mile men's event. Kiprop finished in 15:39.53, winning by more than a minute over teammate Calton Kibet, who was runner-up in 16:50.39. Brian Kipchemis (17:41.69), Nick Janson (17:42.96) and Kennedy Korir (17:53.16) rounded out the top five.

Team scores were not kept for either race.
