Rexroat’s 5 aces in 4th-set run help Chargers stay unbeaten in conference play

GALESBURG — A 10-0 run in the fourth set propelled the Sandburg volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-13, 17-25, 25-13 Arrowhead Conference win over Illinois Valley on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Chargers improved to 6-6 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0. Sandburg is tied atop the league standings with No. 11 Sauk Valley, which the Chargers will face on the road next week.

Leading 11-10 in the fourth set, Abigail Shaffer put down a kill to kick off a 10-point run for Sandburg. Freshman Quinn Rexroat followed with back-to-back aces, and she collected five aces total in the run, which ended with a 21-10 Chargers lead.

Rexroat finished with six of Sandburg's eight aces in the match, and she had 36 assists from her setter position.

Harlee Hainds put down a team-leading 11 kills and had a .304 hitting percentage for the Chargers. Jalie Eller and Madalynn Kanpp each added nine kills, and Shaffer finished with seven.

Libero Addison Gillen led Sandburg with 25 digs and was one of four Chargers to reach double figures. Shaffer had 13 digs, while Eller and Emman Schweigert totaled 10.

Sandburg raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set and looked poised to run away with the opener after a 9-1 push gave the Chargers an 18-10 lead. The Eagles, though, battled their way back to a tie at 23 before a service error and attack error ultimately gave Sandburg the opening set.

The Chargers won 12 of the last 15 points in the second to put themselves on the verge of a sweep. A 9-1 stretch put Illinois Valley up 20-9 in the third and helped them force a fourth set.
