Wasson wins Region 4 women’s golf title behind final-round 82
BYRON — Ellie Wasson won the Region 4 title and was joined on the all-region team by Ava Hackman for the Carl Sandburg College women's golf team at the Region 4 Championship on Sunday and Monday at PrairieView.
After shooting an opening-round 94, Wasson put together an 82 on Monday, which was the best round of anyone in the field by four strokes. Her 36-hole total of 176 edged Rock Valley's Megan Redig by one shot to win the Region 4 championship.
Hackman entered the final round as the leader after shooting an 85 on Sunday. She followed with a second-round 95 to finish four shots back of Wasson and tie DuPage's Haley Casssells for fourth overall. The top five finishers earned all-region honors.
Sandburg claimed the sixth through ninth spots on the leaderboard. Lauren Minkel posted a second-round 86 to to finish sixth at 187. Kylie Fahnestock, playing as an individual, carded an 88 on Monday to take seventh with a 191 total. Lainey Jensen (97-95—192) and Addy Trego (95-98—193) were eighth and ninth, respectively.
Sandburg was the only school to field a full team in the tournament. The Chargers shot rounds of 371 and 358.
The Chargers will attempt to qualify for nationals when they compete in the NJCAA Division I Central District Championship from April 22-23 at Twin Hills in Joplin, Mo.
