Sandburg Women Rally From Down 16 at Half, but Unable Finish Off Cougars
FREEPORT — The Carl Sandburg college women's basketball team stormed back from a big halftime deficit but was unable to close out Highland in a 78-75 Arrowhead Conference loss Tuesday night.
The Chargers (15-7, 3-1) trailed 50-34 at halftime but rallied in the second half. Sandburg outscored the host Cougars 23-11 in the third quarter and held a 75-72 lead in the closing seconds. Highland, though, hit a game-tying 3-pointer with :15 left, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and converted a three-point play with :10 left for the game-winner.
Sophomore guard Elly Bentley finished with a team-best 22 points for Sandburg on 8-of-17 shooting. Bentley was a perfect 6 of 6 at the free-throw line, pulled in seven rebounds and had four assists.
Sophomore Gracie Sim hauled in a career-best 10 rebounds and scored nine points, finishing a point away from her first career double-double.
Forward Brook Pieper had 11 points, four boards, four assists and a pair of blocks in the loss. Sophomore Kelci Shelton also reached double figures, scoring 10 points to go along with 6 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks.
