Bentley Ties Career-High With 32 Points, Chargers Rally Late vs. Elgin for 5th Straight Win

GALESBURG — Elly Bentley tied a career high with 32 points and the Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback for its fifth straight victory in a 72-69 win over Elgin on Tuesday at John Lewis Gym.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers (6-1) trailed 55-54 entering the fourth quarter and saw the Spartans open the final period with a 9-0 run for their largest lead of the night.
• Down 64-54 with 4:30 to play, Capre Ferguson drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner to ignite a 13-0, go-ahead run for Sandburg. Bentley followed by getting fouled on a drive to the basket, and an Elgin player was whistled for a technical foul at the end of the play. Bentley drained all four free throws to put the Chargers down just 64-61 with 4:02 left.
• Ferguson brought Sandburg to within a point after her driving layup, and Kelci Shelton fed Bentley for the go-ahead layup at 3:20 for a 65-64 lead. Shelton closed the run by collecting a steal — one of her seven on the night — and banking in a short jumper to make it 67-64 with 2:55 to play.
• Bentley split a pair of free throws with :12.8 left to give Sandburg a 72-69 advantage. Shelton and Ferguson played dogged defense on the perimeter on Elgin's final possession, as the Spartans could not get off a tying attempt as time expired.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Bentley finished with 32 points while going 10 of 28 from the floor and 12 of 17 at the free-throw line. She added four rebounds and two assists. The sophomore guard matched the 32 points she put up in a victory last season at Southeastern Iowa. Bentley has five outings this season of at least 20 points and is averaging 22.3 points through seven games.
