Rodgers tosses 4-hit shutout as Chargers go 3-1 at Arrowhead-Skyway Conference Clash

GALESBURG — After dropping its opening contest of the Arrowhead-Skyway Conference Clash, the Sandburg softball team bounced back to win its final three games of the tournament Saturday and Sunday at Peck Park.

Key moments
Down 5-2 in the third, the Chargers put up seven runs to take the lead for good. Huffman delivered a two-run triple to start the scoring, and Alexis Brammeier tied the game with an infield single. Sandburg took the lead one batter later as Jaycee Craig doubled to center. Brammeier made it 7-5 by scoring on a passed ball, and the Chargers added on with a Cheyanne Rodgers RBI triple and Jordyn Climer RBI single.

Sandburg standout
Brammeier finished 3 for 4, doubled, scored a run and drove in three in the victory.

Key moments
Locked in a pitchers' duel, the Chargers scored the game's lone run with two gone in the third. Climer singled with one out and took second on a stolen base. After Ryan flied to center for the second out, Climer scored on Hunter's base hit to right field.

Sandburg standout
Rodgers turned in a gem in the circle, throwing a four-hitter for her first career shutout. The freshman gave up just four singles, struck out three and walked one while throwing 91 pitches (63 strikes). She allowed just four Cyclones to reach scoring position in the victory.

Key moments
• Down 6-5 in the top of the seventh, Hannah Pyle swatted a one-out homer to center to tie the game. Two-out singles from Hellige and Brammeier set the stage for Tegan Cobb, who came through with a single to right that plated Hellige with the go-ahead run.
• Prairie State tied the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Chargers regained the lead in extra innings. Placed at second to start the inning, Rodgers moved to third as Climer grounded out. Rodgers then scored on Ryan's sacrifice fly to center.
• The Pioneers pushed the tying run to third in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff sacrifice bunt, but Hellige got a groundout and strikeout to finish off the extra-inning victory.

Sandburg standout
Hellige went the distance in the circle, allowing just two runs on 11 hits and a walk over eight innings. The sophomore struck out nine batters, one off her career high. Hellige also did damage at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
