Hunter nearly hits for cycle as Chargers beat Bay for 1st win

GALESBURG — Ailexa Hunter's near-cycle helped the Sandburg softball team beat Bay in Game 1 of a doubleheader Monday as the Chargers earned their first victory of the season in their home opener.

Key moment
The Chargers never trailed after scoring five times in the bottom of the first. Hunter swatted a two-run triple to center for a 3-0 lead, and Alexis Brammeier had a two-run single to cap the scoring in the frame.

Sandburg standout
Hunter ended the contest a double shy of a cycle as she went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs. She roped an inside-the-park home run to left in the sixth inning for a key insurance run that accounted for the game's final score.

Key moments
• Down 8-6 in the fourth, Jaycee Craig's two-run single tied the game, and the Chargers went ahead on Erin Jackson's bases-loaded walk.
• A Sandburg error and Norse double to lead off the fifth led to Bay taking the lead again. With runners at second and third an RBI groundout tied the game, and Bay went ahead on an infield single.
• The Chargers trailed by four entering the bottom of the seventh. Hunter's RBI triple, a run-scoring passed ball and Craig's solo homer to center brought the Chargers within a run and brought the tying run to the plate, but Jordyn Climer popped out to second to end the contest.

Sandburg standout
Craig reached safely in all five of her trips to the plate, going 3 for 3 with two walks and her seventh-inning homer. The Chargers right fielder scored twice and drove in three.
