Sandburg Softball Heads South to Start Season This Weekend
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College softball team will trade in a central Illinois March snow for a week in the Florida panhandle as the Chargers open their season this weekend during their Spring Break trip.
Sandburg, coming off an 11-25 season last spring, will play doubleheaders on three consecutive days starting at noon Sunday at Coastal Alabama-East. The Chargers then face Pensacola State on Monday and Coastal Alabama-South on Tuesday.
Fans can go behind the scenes of the Chargers' trip with a player takeover on the Sandburg Athletics Instagram, @sandburgchargers.
Sandburg's first home game is slated for 1 p.m. March 22 against Lake County.
NOTABLE RETURNERS
• Emma Wolfe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), sophomore IF
Chargers coach Todd Winkler: "Emma can play multiple positions for us and hit for power."
• Chelsey Catton (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), freshman RHP
"Chelsey has worked hard in the offseason on the mound. I see good things coming from her this spring."
• Maddi Benson (Spring Bay, Ill./Metamora), freshman IF
"Maddi has really stepped up to be a leader for us, and she proved last year that she can hit with power."
FRESH FACES
• Natalie Righi (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), freshman IF
"Natalie is a great player and brings so much energy to the team. She'll be outstanding at shortstop."
• Brooklyn Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw), freshman RHP
"I'm looking for Brook to give us great innings on the mound, and she has a great bat too."
• Reagan Eaves (Nauvoo, Ill./Warsaw), freshman IF
"Reagan had a long fall season with some medical issues, so I'm excited to finally get to see her at work this spring."
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR YOUR TEAM THIS SEASON?
"I'm looking forward to seeing the fight this team is capable of. If we play smart, I think we can put a lot of tallies in the win column."
GAMES TO WATCH
"Our Spring Break trip down south to open the season will give us an opportunity to see how we compete and react against good teams that have already played quite a few games. Our games against Waubonsee (April 3) and Madison (April 23) will help us see where we've improved from the start of the season."
THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF ...
"… we give ourselves a chance to win every game and become a stronger team at the end of the season."
