GALESBURG — Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of those who came to the United States from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
Carl Sandburg College is home to many students of Hispanic descent, including Chargers men's soccer sophomore Brais Gonzalez. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we asked the native of Moaña, Spain about his experience in the U.S. and at Sandburg as a Hispanic student-athlete.
Why do you think it is so important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
We can show off our culture here. We can show people where we came from. Another big thing is that we can learn from the culture here and show our importance.
Are there any challenges you've faced in your time here?
It is very hard to be away from my family and friends at home, the place I was my whole life (before coming to Sandburg). Another challenge was the language barrier. With English being my second language, it is definitely a challenge I had to face. I am very happy now and have learned a lot from being here.
How has being a part of the Hispanic community shaped you as a student-athlete?
I think it is very cool because I stand out from being from Spain. Soccer here has really shaped me to be a leader, and I love being able to support my country while playing my favorite sport. Being from Spain, I can show my love for my country. Also, being able to show the different cultures of soccer here in the United States is awesome.
What is a part of your culture that is important to you?
The food, for sure. The food back at home is healthier. Me being away from a big city in Spain, it is hard to get fast food. We depend on making meals at home. My mother's cooking is the best!
Who is your favorite Hispanic athlete?
Rafael Nadal (Spanish tennis player). With tennis being another one of my favorite sports, he was an idol to me. He was an idol to me because of his success and his winning ability. That is why, to me, he is the symbol of Spain.
