3 Chargers men’s golfers on all-region team as Sandburg ties for 3rd at Region 4 tourney

BYRON — The Sandburg men's golf team had three members earn spots on the All-Region 4 team as the Chargers concluded their season Tuesday in the Region 4 tournament at PrairieView.

Kenny Hoosen, Tanner Wake and Tyler Partee collected all-region honors after finishing in the top 15 on the leaderboard and helping the Chargers tie for third in the 11-team standings

Sandburg tied Madison with a 54-hole total of 941. The Chargers posted rounds of 323, 305 (a season low) and 313.

The tournament also served as the Midwest District qualifier for the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship. The top two teams and the highest finisher in the top 10 not part of those teams advanced to nationals.

Region champion Black Hawk (905) and runner-up Highland (923) were the team qualifiers.

Medalist Marquez Angeles of Bryant & Stratton advanced as an individual with a score of 3 over par for the tournament. He won by four shots over Black Hawk's Aidan Dorathy.

Hoosen, a sophomore from East Peoria, carded rounds of 79, 75 and 80 to tie for 11th at 18 over par. He collected five birdies in the tournament and closed his second round Monday with a 1-over 37 on the front nine.

Wake, a national qualifier last season, earned all-region honors for the second year in a row as he tied for 13th at 19 over par. The sophomore from Elmwood bounced back from a first-round 80 by shooting 77 and 78 in the final two days. Starting his second round on the 10th hole, Wake went out with an even-par 36.

Like Wake, Partee came on strong in the final two days and tied for 13th at 19 over par. After opening with an 83, Partee, a freshman out of Limestone High School, shot 75 and 77 in the last two rounds. Just as Wake did, he started Monday's second round with an even-par 36 on the back nine.

Sandburg was tied for sixth after the opening round, but the Chargers moved up to fifth following Monday's second round as they shot a season-low 305. Only Black Hawk (296) had a better second round than the Chargers. Sandburg's previous low round this year was 311 on April 11 in the first round of the Monmouth Invite.

The Chargers continued their late push as they shot a final-round 313 and moved into a tie for third. Seven of Sandburg's eight counting scores in the final two days were in the 70s.

With more stringent qualifying criteria in place this season, the tournament snapped a string of 13 consecutive years (and 17 times in the last 18 seasons) the Chargers had advanced an individual or qualified as a team for nationals.
