Wake finishes T-9 at Duane Chanay Invite as Chargers open season

COAL VALLEY — Tanner Wake posted a pair of rounds in the 70s and recorded a top-10 finish as the Sandburg men's golf team began its 2025-26 season at the Duane Chanay Invite on Monday at Oakwood.

Wake, a sophomore from Elmwood, opened the 36-hole event with a 7-over-par 78 and closed with a 2-over 73, tying him for ninth overall. Wake, who competed at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship as a freshman, shot even par on the back nine of his final round. That stretch included four consecutive birdies on holes 13-16. He had two other birdies on the day, both coming at the par-5 first.

Sandburg finished fifth of 10 teams with a 36-hole score of 633. The Chargers came in at 319 in the first round and totaled a 314 in Round 2. Sandburg was 17 shots back of fourth-place Iowa Central, and the Chargers edged sixth-place Illinois Valley by one stroke.

Sandburg sophomore Cooper Hansen finished 25th with rounds of 77 and 83. Freshman Tyler Partee tied for 26th at 161 (82-79) for the tournament.
