Sandburg Men’s Golf Aims to Extend Nationals Streak to 11
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's golf team hopes the 2022-23 season goes to 11.
The Chargers are looking to qualify as a team or advance an individual to the NJCAA Division II Championship for the 11th year in a row and 15th time in the last 16 seasons. Sandburg returns sophomore Clayton Phillips, who qualified as an individual last year to extend the program's streak.
The Chargers' season opener scheduled for Monday across the river at Southeastern was moved to 11 a.m. Sept. 29 at Burlington Golf Club. Instead, they'll start their season by hosting the Sandburg Invite at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at Lake Bracken.
NOTABLE RETURNERS
Clayton Phillips (New London, Iowa/New London), sophomore
- Qualified for nationals as a freshman last season, finishing tied for 43rd
- Earned a spot on the All-Arrowhead Conference team last spring, placing sixth overall with 76.3 scoring average
- Medalist at Arrowhead meet at Highland with a 3-under-par 69
Cooper Theleritis (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), sophomore
- Posted three top-10s during Arrowhead season last spring and made all-conference team with 78.8 scoring average
- Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle: "Cooper has worked extremely hard this offseason to become a leader, and we fully expect him to challenge Clayton at our No. 1 spot."

Twaddle: "Our expectations are to get better every day, both as people and as golfers."
TOURNAMENT TO WATCH
Region IV Tournament from Oct. 6-8 at PrairieView in Byron, which serves as the Chargers' national qualifier.

Twaddle: "If we control the controllable. In golf, you cannot control the other teams, the weather or the breaks people get. We need to control our decision-making, our toughness and embrace difficult conditions."
