Phillips Medalist at Highland After Shooting 3-Under 69

FREEPORT — Clayton Phillips (New London, Iowa/New London) took medalist honors after shooting a season-low 3-under-par 69 in the Carl Sandburg College men's golf team's Arrowhead Conference meet hosted by Highland on Wednesday at Park Hills.

Phillips shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine and 1-under 35 on the back to win by two strokes over Highland's Riku Moriyama and Illinois Valley's Ian Roach. The Chargers freshman, who will compete in the NJCAA Division II Championship next month, carded six birdies in his round (on holes 1, 4, 8, 15, 16 and 18) and just three bogeys (on 6, 13, and 14). Phillips birdied all four of the par-5s in his round.

Phillips' showing helped the Chargers post their best round of the spring and tie Highland for second as a team with a 310 total. Sandburg's other scores came from Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT) with a 78, Calvin Peterson (Williamsfield, Ill./Williamsfield) with a 79 and Cooper Theleritis (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) with an 84. Sandburg's score was its best since a 307 in the second round of the Knox Prairie Fire Fall Invite on Oct. 3 at Soangetaha.

Black Hawk won Wednesday's event with a score of 300. Illinois Valley was fourth at 314 and Sauk Valley fifth at 358.
