Chargers trounce Madison in rematch to advance to Region 4 semifinals

MADISON, Wis. — The Sandburg men's basketball team got revenge in a big way in its rematch with Madison.
Five days after the WolfPack snapped the Chargers' 10-game win streak, Sandburg went up to Madison again, this time earning a wire-to-wire, 85-67 victory Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Region 4 Division II District B tournament.
Sandburg (22-9), the No. 10 seed in the region, advances to face second-seeded Rock Valley in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Sunday at Rock Valley. The game will be streamed on Rock Valley's Hudl page.
To get there, the Chargers used a tremendous night from sophomore Keauntrey Barnes, who tied his season high with 28 points. Barnes shot 10 of 17 overall from the floor, including 8 of 11 from 3-point range. He set season highs for made field goals and made 3s in the win, helping Sandburg shoot 57 percent from the field (32 of 56) and from beyond the arc (13 of 23).
Barnes also had 28 points in the Chargers' Dec. 19 win over DuPage. Thursday was his sixth 20-point game of the season. Three of those have come in the last three weeks.
Barnes got his scoring started early against Madison, making consecutive 3s in the opening 90 seconds for the Chargers' first points of the night. He finished the first half with 18 points while going 6 for 9 from long range as Sandburg took a 43-31 lead into the locker room.
The Chargers led by as many as 21 points and had three other players score in double figures. Ralph Wires, coming off a career-best 29 points in last week's outing against Madison, scored 15 on 6-for-11 shooting.
Sophomore Matt Bockman and freshman Gavin Grothaus each added 11 points for Sandburg. Bockman was 3 of 5 from downtown, while Grothaus was perfect on five shots from the field. Grothaus also led the Chargers with seven rebounds.
Freshman James Blackwell had nine points in 29 minutes off the bench for Sandburg.
