Bockman’s clutch 3-pointer lifts Sandburg men to 5th straight win

GALESBURG — Matt Bockman's tiebreaking 3-pointer in the final minute sent the Sandburg men's basketball team to its fifth straight win with a 72-68 victory Saturday over Elgin.

Knotted at 68, Ralph Wires kicked out to an open Bockman at the top of the key, and the sophomore lefty drilled the go-ahead trey with 32.9 seconds to go.

The win was the seventh in eight games for the Chargers (16-8), who improved to 10-2 in their last 12 contests.

Sophomore Keauntrey Barnes finished with a team-best 19 points for the Chargers, who shot 50 percent (27 of 54) from the field. Barnes was 6 of 14 from the floor while also turning in seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Freshman Rylan Carton scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Carton tied Gavin Grothaus for the team lead with nine rebounds, and he had three steals.

Grothaus finished a point and a rebound away from a double-double. Wires dished out a career-high 11 assists in the victory. The previous high for the sophomore point guard from Quincy was nine on Jan. 14 last season at Kishwaukee.

Sandburg led 43-33 at halftime, but saw the Spartans made a quick run in the opening minutes of the second half to take the lead.
