Chargers rally from big hole in Game 1, but No. 23 Spartans sweep doubleheader

ELGIN — The Sandburg baseball team dug itself out of a nine-run deficit in Game 1 of its doubleheader Tuesday at Elgin, but the 23rd-ranked Spartans had a quick response as they swept both contests with the Chargers.

Key moments
• The Chargers found themselves in a 10-1 hole after four innings but rallied all the way back to tie the game. A seven-run fifth was highlighted by two-run singles from Derek Castillo and Jace Wilkerson, helping pull Sandburg within 10-8.
• After a Spartans run in the bottom of the fifth, the Chargers plated three in the sixth to even the score. Castillo and Trinidad opened the inning with singles and scored on Dayton Lundstrom's base hit to left. Lundstrom then plated the tying run as Joel Medina drilled a two-out double to right field.
• The tie was short-lived, however, as Elgin used four walks, two singles, a hit batsman and an error to put together a six-run bottom of the sixth.

Sandburg standout
Lundstrom drove in a team-leading three runs as he reached base twice. The freshman left fielder went 1 for 3 with a walk and scored a pair of runs.

Key moments
• Down 1-0 in the third, the Chargers knotted the score with a two-out rally. Cintron doubled to center to put himself in scoring position, and Colton Allen came through with a two-bagger to left field.
• Elgin scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, then plated seven runs in the fourth to blow the contest open.

ICC GAME CANCELED
The Chargers' game scheduled for Wednesday at Illinois Central has been canceled and won't be made up. Sandburg is slated to close the regular season at noon Saturday at home against Oakton.
