Chargers sweep Sauk Valley behind Cintron’s big day

DIXON — Derek Cintron had a big day at the plate and earned the save in Game 1 as the Sandburg baseball team picked up an Arrowhead Conference sweep at Sauk Valley on Tuesday.

Key moments
• Tied at 2 in the top of the fourth, the Chargers stormed ahead for good after plating four two-out runs. Talen Davis' bases-loaded grounder to shortstop was misplayed, allowing a run to score and extending the inning. Joel Medina followed with a walk to force in a run, and second baseman Cintron knocked in two runs with a single to center.
• With Sandburg up 9-5 in the seventh, Sauk Valley brought the tying run to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Cintron came on in relief and escaped the jam, getting a groundout to first and a flyout to center to finish off the victory.

Sandburg standout
In addition to earning the save on the mound, Cintron reached base four times, finishing 3 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. The redshirt sophomore also stole a base in the victory.

Key moment
Up 3-2 in the top of the third, the Chargers busted the game open with a six-run stanza. Morales came through with a two-run single and Yasiel Trinidad doubled in a run before a run-scoring passed ball made it 7-2. Medina and Cintron followed with RBI base hits for a 9-2 Sandburg lead.

Sandburg standout
Medina hit a two-run home run in the second to give Sandburg the lead for good at 3-2. The right fielder went 2 for 3 with a walk, three runs scored and three RBIs out of the leadoff spot.
