Chargers Put Up 15 Runs vs. Illinois Valley to Finish Off Pair of Weekend Splits

PERU — The Carl Sandburg College baseball team matched its season high with 15 runs in a Game 2 victory Saturday at Illinois Valley as the Chargers split a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend against Joliet and IVCC.

KEY MOMENT
The Wolves took advantage of two Chargers errors in the first inning to plate a pair of runs and never trailed.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Logan Van Heuklon hit a two-run homer in the third to cut Sandburg's deficit to 6-3. The sophomore catcher finished 2 for 4 in the contest.

KEY MOMENTS
The Chargers scored twice in the first as Payton Hankins drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a passed ball. Van Heuklon added an RBI single later in the frame.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Connor Best delivered a stellar performance on the mound, striking out 10 batters in six innings. The righthander didn't issue a walk and allowed just one run on five hits. He threw 60 of his 89 pitches for strikes as he put together his second straight outing with double-digit Ks.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the fifth and doubled their lead with back-to-back RBI singles with two out in the inning.

Jack Shields collected two of the Chargers' three hits, going 2 for 3 with an RBI double in the sixth.

KEY MOMENT
The Chargers needed just one hit to put up three runs in the first inning. Sandburg used four walks, a hit batsman and Hankins' RBI single to right to jump to an early 3-0 lead.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Starter Parker Stoneking delivered four shutout innings to collect his second victory in as many outings. The lefty allowed only two hits, walked two and struck out four over 61 pitches.
