Smith Ties Season High With 10 Ks as Chargers Split With Cougars

FREEPORT — David Smith fanned 10 and finished an out away from a complete game in the nightcap as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at Highland on Wednesday.

KEY MOMENTS
• Down 4-1, the Chargers rallied to even the score behind a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Jack Shields doubled with two out in the fifth and scored on Bryce Brown's single to left to make it 4-2. Hunter Caves reached on an error to lead off the sixth, and Jaden Coleman followed with a walk. Mitch Ball brought both home with a two-out double to center field.
• The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Brown's error at shortstop allowed the go-ahead run to come in from second.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Ball knocked in two with his sixth-inning double in addition to scoring a run and stealing a base.

KEY MOMENTS
Ahead 1-0 in the fourth, the Chargers padded their lead with a four-run frame. Payton Hankins doubled to lead off the inning, and Ball followed with a single. Shields then drove both in with a line-drive double to right. Shields came around on a fielder's choice by Brown, who went on to steal second, steal third and then score on an error by the Cougars' pitcher.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Smith struck out the side in the first inning on his way to tying a season high with 10 Ks. He kept the Cougars off the board until there were two out in the fifth and finished one out away from a complete game. The righthander allowed one earned run on eight hits and walked two. He caught six of his strikeout victims looking.
